What Growth Feels Like

The passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even (or especially) when it’s not going well, is the hallmark of the growth mindset.
— Carol S. Dweck

We’ve all experienced the excruciating feeling of beating our heads up against a proverbial wall. Was it when you were studying for that Statistics exam? It got so bad that your textbook was moments away from the fire. Or perhaps it was when you were learning CSS? You got so close to putting your laptop through the wall.

The turning point to a fruitful finish, however, is the precise moment we push past these episodes of fruitlessness and keep at it. Persist. Persevere. Snatch the book from the fire. Yank the laptop out of the wall. Get back to it. Be encouraged: This is what growth feels like.

One Day it's Going to Be Your Last

One day you will wake up, and there won’t be any more time to do the things you’ve always wanted.
— Paulo Coelho

It’s so easy to say, “Soon, I’ll start that,” or “I’ll get to that as soon as things slow down.” These are convenient phrases that I’ve taken advantage of many times in life. But one day we’re really going to wake up, and it’s going to be the last day. Time really will be up.

I say do it now. Start now. Get it going now. Make it happen now. Now is the time. Now is what you have. Use it.

The Tempo of Great Men

I walk slowly, but I never walk backward.
— Abraham Lincoln

If slow and steady worked for Lincoln, our 16th president and preserver of the union, then it can work for us too.

Speed isn't what counts on our way to growth. A plodding pace is all we need. It's the tempo of great men. Rest in that today.
